      James would have started work probably by the age 9 or 10 at the latest and, given his father’s background as a pottery manager, he would have been familiar with the various stages and materials of production. ![]()  |

      At the age of 14 or a little before, James would have become formally apprenticed as a thrower under Spencer Rogers. Certainly, his first known position was as an operative thrower with Spencer Rogers at Dalehall.  |
