1849 – Summer

The early summer of 1849 brought the arrival of James and Mary’s first grandchild, James, son of Richard and Eliza.

July brought an outbreak of Asiatic or malignant cholera to Burslem. As a recently appointed Guardian of the Poor, James’ role was to help those who could not afford to pay for medical care by arranging for them to be seen by a specially selected doctor at no cost to themselves.
