1859
James Edwards support for evening and further education continued throughout his life. Speaking in 1859 at the annual dinner of the Friends and Supporters of the Newcastle School of Art, he talked of his support for all the Schools of Art in the District and stressed their potential importance for both local industry and the personal development of the pupils and students – he said “They ought not be regarded as established for the benefit of a few, but for the whole population”
He was disappointed they were not generating enough local financial support and “recommended that the working classes of the town should make subscriptions among themselves for the benefit of the school”
And he expressed the view, radical for its time – that he “hoped the day was not far distant when the government would pay the Masters of the Schools of Art”.
